If you've recently had a baby diagnosed with Trisomy 21 (Down syndrome), know someone who has or are in the childbirth or medical field, this is a good resource. It offers real, personal accounts that can be reassuring to anyone welcoming a baby with Down syndrome into their family. Though I have never met these authors in person, I have followed these stories for the past year and a half and can vouch for the authenticity of every one of them. I read this book before it was released to the public, and it is truly a work born out of the authors' dedication and passion for supporting families affected by Trisomy 21. You won't be disappointed.
This book is a healing balm for parents just receiving a Down syndrome diagnosis for their baby. I received a prenatal diagnosis at 20 weeks and most of the books available were out of date. This book is brand new, personal stories told by families just having their babies in the last year or two.
{Unexpected} is divided into sections...those receiving a prenatal diagnosis, those who choose to wait it out until birth, those who receive a birth diagnosis, stories told by both mom and dad, and those with unusual circumstances. I like this organization method because it allows me to choose the stories most applicable to me. I read the others when I have time, but the ones I most like to read are those from moms like me.
My favorite part is that while most of the moms felt the same fear that I did, all of them show the joy and love for their babies. It helped to wash away my own fear and look forward to my baby's future.
A wonderful resource for those processing a diagnosis. Real stories that touch on the full spectrum of emotions makes if relatable to all. The inclusion of prenatal diagnosis stories and couples perspectives makes it unique from anything else available.
The stories are beautifully written from the perspective of parents who have experienced first hand a Down syndrome diagnosis. Real, raw, inspiring and heartwarming. Highly recommend to all parents, especially those with a new Trisomy 21 diagnosis.
