British Pop Before The Beatles Volume 1 The Story - edition by Spencer Leigh. Arts & Photography eBooks @ . Reviews
This is part one of an extended, two volume, work, which first appeared as “Halfway to Paradise.†“Halfway to Paradise†was first published in 1996 and began life as fifty hours of taped interviews, for twelve, one hour radio programmes for Radio Merseyside called, "Shakin' All Over." Spencer Leigh expanded those interviews, with over one hundred different people, into a compilation book. When I reviewed this before, I said it was a shame that it has not been revised, re-edited and re-published on kindle, as it is a treasure trove for anyone interested in the early years of British popular music. Thankfully, Spencer Leigh has now done just that – with extra interviews and some explanatory text about who people are and their place in music history.
This, then, is British music before the Beatles. It is an era that is often derided as being unimportant. I am a huge Beatles fan myself, but I also love a lot of the music from the 1950's and early 1960's. Far from just being American copyists, there was a vibrant and popular British music scene. This book consists of interviews from people such as Tommy Steele, Frankie Vaughan, Jack Good, George Melly, Lonnie Donegan, Adam Faith, Bruce Welch, Cliff Richard, Marty Wilde, Larry Parnes, Joe Brown and Hank Marvin. They discuss early television shows, such as 6.5 Special, Juke Box Jury and Oh Boy!, Skiffle, Jazz, novelty records, Joe Meek and touring, among other subjects. So, if you want to know what happened backstage on the Larry Parnes Extravaganza shows or read how he named his artists (if you thought some of the names were awful, bear in mind that he wanted to rename Joe Brown `Elmer Twitch and the Fidgets'!), are interested in Billy Fury, the skiffle craze or the beginnings of British rock and roll, then you will love this book.
Sadly, Leigh has neglected to incorporate all the clippings and photographs he used in the paperback version of this book in this kindle edition. Although these can obviously be found online and YouTube will have clips of just about everyone mentioned, it is still a shame that he felt they could not be included. However, I am thrilled that this has been re-issued as it is a real treasure trove of information.
The second volume of this book includes profiles of figures from the period; such as Johnny Kidd and the Pirates, Larry Parnes, Litz Roza and others. There is a further companion volume to this, called “American Pop Before the Beatles,†(previously released as, “Baby, That is Rock and Roll,†and also extended and re-released) which contains interviews with American musicians from the same era. Spencer Leigh deserves to be much better known as a writer of really good books about music - he has produced excellent works about the early days of rock and roll and the Beatles, which are both readable and written with a deep love and understanding of the subject.
