I thoroughly enjoyed Roger Zelazny's take on parallel universes. Given the ages of the main characters I suspect this would be classed as a "juvenile," but the story holds up for adults who like the SF/Fantasy genre. I happen to be a huge fan of Zelazny so make your own allowances for this prejudice. There is science. There are sorceress and sorcerers, a couple of werewolves and a "let's rescue dad" storyline. I wish Zelazny had written more stories involving this multiverse. I would give it 4 stars.Product details

A Dark Traveling Millennium Book 3 eBook Roger Zelazny Reviews
I picked this up originally because it is a Zelazny book. I don't read a lot of YA novels, which I think this classifies as, but I made an exception for the author's sake. It is really good. Zelazny uses several new (at the time) inter-dimensional travel concepts, and some interesting political-morality issues, and puts them together in an exciting read. Is it correct for a civilization (or country or whatever) to interfere with the development of another civilization (or country or whatever)? Suppose that the developing civilization was being coerced by an "evil", third civilization. Is it correct for a Good-aligned people to intervene on the behalf of a less developed civilization, in order to prevent another civilization from interfering? It makes some good arguments both ways, and should be read by most young adults, and most adults for that matter.
When Jim finds his father missing and signs of a struggle in the workshop he must find him if he is still alive. Can Jim locate his father when he may be in another dimension entirely and the dark band villain who assaulted him is at large?
"I'm a normal fourteen-year-old boy....My sister Becky is a witch, my older brother Dave lives in a castle, and our exchange student Barry is a trained assassin. I also have an uncle named George who is a werewolf..."
Zelazny gives us this great intro for Jim and his family. The characters are pieces in a conflict of immense scope. Earth is just one of many, some Earths aim to protect others from abuse, some are dead worlds where humanity had died off, and a few others are called dark band worlds who seek to exploit worlds less advanced than they are. The dark band worlds and light bands are in direct opposition in this.
A Dark Traveling is written from the first person perspective of young Jim, a werewolf and family member of an exclusive society that protects the world from outside influences. Jim is just a regular person in an extraordinary situation. He is a protagonist, not a superhero. The supernatural werewolf side of him isn't that advantageous in A Dark Traveling and gets him into just as much trouble as it is an asset.
Roger Zelazny wrote A Dark Traveling in terms of black and white. There are light worlds and dark worlds, good and evil. This gives us a clear expectation what to expect from Jim and his family and from those villains from the mysterious dark band.
Multiple worlds is a characteristic Zelazny theme. He is most recognized for his Amber Chronicles in which the use of multiple worlds plays a significant role. He keeps it interesting, and with a feel that reality is limitless. A Dark Traveling is another work where he has excelled at this. It's a shame there isn't more to the story. A Dark Traveling is a novella that could have been another whole series
The climax felt flat, and not as satisfying as other Zelazny novels. There was a good amount of buildup but it just didn't seem as dramatic as expected. That may be my only criticism of A Dark Traveling. It was a fun read throughout and can easily be read in an afternoon when you are looking for a light read.

I knew I was taking a chance - what is the likelyhood of someone finding Mr. Zelazny's unpublished notes for a new book series? Apparently, nil. This is based upon the Amber series but that is where the connection to Zelazny's superb writing skills ends. Save your money. Also, poorly proofed with a lot of grammar and type errors. Unprofessional.
Zelazny was beautifully prescient with this novella on the dangers & advantages of travelling between alternate worlds. Very topical in the present day. Not terse, yet you want more of this cosmos. & poetic as always.
I got A Dark Travelling because I am a fan. Must have! & the book itself was even better than I thought it would be. I recommend.
Not Roger's best, but I was glad to find a piece by one of my favorites who died too soon.

I am a Zelazny fan and have been since I was a teenager. I bought my copy of this book, his only juvenile novel, 30 years ago when it was released as a paperback on Avon. My children read it. I bought this copy for my Grand Daughter, who is in 6th grade, for her 12th birthday to keep the tradition going. I haven't asked her yet how she liked it but I have high hopes.
